I Want One: Whimseybox

I'm sure you've all heard of the recent trend in monthly beauty boxes so when I saw this, my heart skipped a little beat! And then subsequently sank again because the only way to get your hands on one is to live in the USA! (SEE just ANOTHER reason I should move!)

Anyway, I thought it would be selfish not to share this with those of you who could try this out, and anyone outside the US who thinks this is a great idea can come sympathise with me on how hard done by we are not being able to get our hands on it!

So let me present you you..... Whimseybox!

Started by Alicia DiRago of Dismount Creative, Whimseybox has been set up to encourage creativity! For $15 a month you will receive a beautifully packed box with 4-5 craft product samples based on things you tell them you like when you register. There's a project gallery, step-by-step tutorials, a blog and a new community of fellow crafters to join!

I WANT TO JOIN!! I just think this is such a great idea and I would love to receive one of these in the post every month! As far as i'm aware, we don't have anything like this in the UK? Please feel free to come and correct me if i'm wrong there!? Subscription is currently through invite only at this stage it seems but you can request an invite HERE.

What do you think of this idea? Anyone tempted to join?

  9. Sadly I signed up and paid for a full year. So far the items are fun but I'm never sure WHEN I'm going to receive my months box...and at this point we are a full month behind in what we have paid for. I will not be signing up for any more once this year is finished and only hope I get a full 12 months of boxes as at this point I get the feeling I will only be seeing 11 months (Mays box came in June and so far nothing has shown up in June). VERY discouraging. If they weren't ready to go public, they should have been up front and delayed. And excuses are a poor thing for a new business to give. Just fix it and make it right, FAST!

  10. Below is my review of my first (and last) experience with Whimseybox. Buyer beware! I got in when the price was still $15/month, and now it's up to $25/month. What did I receive for $15? A small length of chunky faux gold chain, a length of plain ball chain, and 2 skeins of embroidery floss. That's it. Read on:

I received the July box on 8/4/12. (signed up/paid on 7/4) I waited awhile to post, because I was afraid my disappointment would get the best of me, and what I had to say would not be very nice.

I signed up for what I thought would be new crafting materials every month. I'm glad I didn't pay more than $15 for the July box, or I think I would be filing a dispute with my credit card company. That's a really nice way of saying the bit of chain and floss in the box was not worth $15, and to think the price has gone up to $25 is mind boggling.

I am very disappointed. The silver lining is I seem to be one of the few whose box wasn't completely smooshed in the shipping envelope, because It will be the only thing I will find a use for. (mine was only partially smooshed)

I went back and re-read the FAQS to make sure I hadn't misunderstood what Whimseybox was about, and I think a complete re-write is in order. Here is an example from the FAQ: "How do I choose what is in my box?" "Well, you don’t! We use the information you shared in your user profile to select a variety of fun products to inspire you."

That is not true. Everyone receives the same box. Therefore it cannot be based on user profiles.

Here is another example, that is misleading: "What is Whimseybox?" "Whimseybox is an inexpensive, fun way to get inspired and expand your creative experience. After you subscribe we’ll start sending you a box with 4-5 different craft products to try and enjoy every month."

That is a stretch of imagination in my opinion. I suppose if you count the two skeins of floss separately, I received 4 products.

All in all I am not only completely disappointed, but rather a bit grouchy about spending $15 on materials that together would cost less than $5 at the local craft supply store.
